Sinking Sand; Grab the Pole is a Christian fiction novel about U.S. Navy Seal John Thorne. Even John's training as a Seal did not prepare him for a society without ethics. Terrorism profoundly changed the world order and in the last two years he has escaped from the ruthless slave masters nine times. Recapture by the lawless authorities is a certainty. Anyone who controls necessary services can exert extreme power. All who aren't in power are pressed into servitude.
John has been searching for his wife and children for two and a half years. For six months after the first attack, he evaded the violence and made it to their home in Virginia. But he was unable to obtain any information. He is anxious to escape and continue his search.

This is not your typical postapocalypic story:First of all, there is less physical destruction to the earth than in most postapocalypic stories. Worldwide terrorism attacks toppled the world governments, followed by a few months of total chaos in which greedy, ruthless men would stop at nothing to gain power and anything else they could lay their hands on. Anyone who stood in their way was killed or captured and forced into slave labor. Eventually things begin to calm down and the men who had proven to be the most powerful (and probably also the most brutal) begin to make uneasy alliances with each other and a new society was born: a society built on a ruthless slave trade.
Secondly, this plot differs from the typical postapocalypic story in that a strong-willed woman has managed to build a secret Christian oasis amid the brutality in this new society. (This book does not explain how she managed that, but a later book does. I would not consider that a spoiler, just a preview. As of the time I am writing this review I have read the first three books.) Also I will mention to any guys who are turned off by the fact that it is a strong-willed woman who pulls this off, don't be; the author makes it work quite well.
This book, which is the first in the series, follows a man named John Thorne. He was a U. S. Navy Seal, but is now one of the slaves. In the last two years he has escaped from nine ruthless slaves masters only to be recaptured by the ruthless authorities who are actually the slave traders between the slave masters who now call themselves Barons.
When John is first turned over to Lily Jacqueline "Jackie" Schwartz, the baroness, his first thoughts are only of escape and cannot understand why his fellow slaves are unwilling to join in his plans. As things progress he is repeatedly told that this compound is safe but he must weigh the evidence himself. He must decide if this really is a safe place, or if he and everyone else there are being brainwashed into a cult.
This book has two strong points going for it: The strong and intriguing plot and the variety of well-developed characters. The book does hit you with so many characters in such a short time that it is a little hard to keep everyone straight, but it is largely the wide variety of well-developed characters which drive the intrigue. I do not read near as many books as I once did, but this book is well worth reading. Back when I did a lot more reading I mainly read fantasy, science fiction, and adventure. This book does not fit the first two categories, but is a great adventure.

Sinking Sand; Grab the Pole The Compound Series Book 1 edition by Lynn Vadney Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Sinking Sand; Grab the pole is the first book of the up and coming writer Lynn Vadney and while this isn't my normal genre to read, once I started I couldn't put it down. The book is set in a future America that has been torn apart by terrorism and it hits close to home with chilling accuracy. Also the genre combination that she writes is truly unique. I would classify it as Christian Fiction/ Mystery/ Dystopian/ Espionage novel. It's rare enough to find Christian fiction that that merges seamlessly with genre fiction but somehow the author has managed to achieve it.
The book follows John Thorne, who after the collapse of the United States, has been bounced between prisons and slavery. This former Navy Seal has been searching for his family and planning escape after escape to find them. That's when he ends up once again sold, but this time to Jackie the owner of a compound. Fighting bouts of PTSD he has to decide if this compound is truly as safe as everyone says or if it is the cover of a far more dangerous and sinister brainwashing cult. I don't want to give too much away because half the fun was discovering all the secrets the Compound had to offer.
Another bonus is that even though the books protagonist is male the book also featured several strong female characters. Also with the cliffhanger ending you'll be glad that the sequel is already out!
